What is Early Intervention?

Early Intervention (EI) is a family-focused service that addresses developmental delays for children from birth to age 6. These services are free to qualified children through a federally funded program.

Through a collaborative approach, EI professionals work with families to provide strategies and resources tailored to their child’s unique needs.

By addressing developmental issues early, EI helps children build a stronger foundation for future success in school and everyday life by incorporating therapeutic services, educational activities, and developmental support.

How to Refer Your Child for Early Intervention Services

If your child is between birth and three years old, an assessment is required to determine eligibility for the BabyNet program and Early Intervention services. Children between the ages of three and six may qualify for services through SCDDSN.

Referrals can be made by a parent, caregiver, physician, daycare center, or anyone concerned about a child’s development. Referrals for children 0-3 are made to BabyNet.

To make a referral: Go online to babynet.scdhhs.gov/prebabynet/ or call 1-866-512-8881.

Children 3-6

For children 3 to 6 years of age, a referral can be made to the Department of Disability and Special Needs (DDSN) by a family member who believes their child has a developmental delay, intellectual disability, or autism.

To make a referral: Call the DDSN toll-free screening service at 1-800-289-7012.
